No Bank Account? Payroll Card May Be Best Bet
Instead of a paper check at the end of the workweek, some employees now have the option of receiving their wages in what may be the paycheck of the future. Payroll cards are being billed as a convenient, cost-effective way to handle payday. They are targeted toward part-time workers, low-income workers, temporary workers and teenagers. VISA USA's Todd Brockman said 32 percent of the population either does not have a banking account of any kind or does not have the banking account that suits their needs. More>

Mexican Immigrants Boost Economy Back Home
MEXICO CITY - Nearly one Mexican in five regularly gets money from relatives employed in the United States, making Mexico the largest repository of such remittances in the world, according to a poll sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank. The pollster, Sergio Bendixen, estimated the payments help feed, house and educate at least a quarter of Mexico's 100 million people.

Employers Move Toward Electronic Pay Stubs
Six out of 10 employers think that the paper pay stub’s days may be numbered. In fact, the majority of employers (52%) expect their organization to offer electronic pay stub delivery rather than printed pay stubs by January 2004. This is in addition to nearly one-third of the employers surveyed already posting their employees’ pay data online. More>

Prepaid Cards
As the "pay later" market evolved in the 1980s and the "pay now" market evolved in the 1990s, the emerging market of the 2000s is "pay before." While the developed credit card and debit card market account for trillions of transaction dollars annually, the new prepaid card market is expected to top $240 billion globally this year, and may hit $500 billion by the year 2007. Prepaid Cards Help US Consumers Manage Money
Prepaid cards are becoming a money management tool in the US, with payments firm, Coinstar, finding 32 per cent of Americans to have used a prepaid card for a purchase or transaction. This contrasts with 45 per cent using debit cards, and is not a big differential given the relatively recent emergence of prepaid cards. Survey respondents favored prepaid cards for the ability to avoid credit card interest charges (36 per cent), avoiding the accumulation of credit card debt (35 per cent) and the ability to control spending (34 per cent), while 14 per cent lacked a credit card.

Prepaid Card Revenues To Double Through 2007
By 2007, prepaid card applications will see global revenues of USD 500 billion, with TowerGroup advising that “financial institutions need to reexamine the impact of these applications on their businesses”. Until now, banks have overlooked prepaid products, which were restricted to closed environments, but must safeguard their payments franchise by including prepaid as part of their “hat trick” of payment products. Banks offering prepaid products as part of “the evolution of the cards business” stand to displace cash and checks, extend their credit and debit card business, and deepen relationships with their customers.
